This is an original late 1961 Gretsch
model 6120, serial number 44619, and a second label reading 49509 (1962) that is glued on top of the original label (see closeup). This guitar is in excellent condition. Ed Ball, who authored the fantastic book, "The history of the Legendary Gretsch 6120", has told us that the first serial number is from the very last batch of 50 single cutaway model 6120's built in late 1961. The second serial number was applied approximately 2 1/2 months later in 1962 by Ed's calculations. The reason why this guitar left the factory with two labels is unknown, but this guitar might well be considered as the last single cut 6120 shipped by Gretsch (perhaps as a special order) as they were already building the 'new' double cutaway models by then. This guitar was owned by a southern U.S. gospel guitarist from Georgia, and the
guitar is featured on his old LP’s from the 1960’s (also included with the
purchase) as seen in the last picture.
This guitar has a nice straight neck,
low 4/64-inch string height at the 12th fret, and plenty of
adjustment left on the bridge. It does
not need a neckset. The guitar plays
like butter. There’s a chip in the binding
at the neck heel that’s missing (as seen in the close-up), and a short area of
the binding nearby that has a few aged cracks (also seen in the close-up). The body depth is 2 1/8-inches, and the fingerboard width is 1 11/16-inch at the stringnut.
The orange finish hasn’t faded much, as it still has nice color, as well as some subtle curly maple figuring in the wood. There are no cracks in the body or neck, no headstock repairs; in fact, there are no structural issues of any kind! The guitar really has very little playing
wear. Even the frets show only slight playing
wear, although the treble pickup’s plastic trim ring has a chip missing off one of its corners. Lastly, the original tuners have long ago
been replaced with gold Grovers. This very fine, and rare vintage Gretsch 6120 comes in an old Guild hardshell case.
