The Guitar is tremendous! 1961 Guild Starfire III GREAT action, with room for adjustment if you want even lower action. Neck is straight! All electronics work perfectly. No major scratches or anything to pull away from her great looks! She was refinished and set up like this before I bought her, and they did a really good job. No wood cracks or flaws that I can find, but you can tell that it was a refinish job. The heel of the neck and on the head by the tuners show some very slight finish cracks.....hardly noticable. No buckle rash (just the normal wear marks in the back that you really can't help), and only an occasional tiny imperfection here & there that you'll have to search for to find. Fret wear is minimal and there is absolutely no fret buzz! There is one slight pick scratch above the neck pick-up. I tried, but the camera wouldn't capture it. I bought her from a high-end vintage guitar shop in Chicago, who said she came from the West Coast. What ever life she lived previously, there still a whole lotta life left in her!
The only thing I'd do to it if I was keeping it is change the strings, but I'll let the next owner use his own preference for that. She still has the original silver tailpiece, but the tuners & bridge are gold. I've been looking for a gold tailpiece, but have yet to find one reasonaly priced. The label inside reads serial #17676. The tuners have been changed to Yamaha's and they work very well, every bit as well as Grovers or Schallers in my opinion. The pot knobs are original with the Guild "G" letter logo on a silver background, and clear (slightly yellowing) knobs. They look really neat, and help set this classic guitar off with a flair. This guitar looks fantanstic on stage!
And this baby sings.......... The Seymour Duncans are absolutely perfect for this guitar! (No, I do not have the original pick-ups.) You can get some real bottom end growl, or you can boost the highs and never lose the "sweetness". The neck and bridge pick-ups are matched really well in volume too....I always hate switching from the neck to the bridge pick-up and having to adjust the volume too. Power chords sound full and rich, and I could get as much bite as I wanted for my occasional lead riffs. The ONLY reason this guitar is for sale is because I just bought two other guitars (an old Gibson and an vintage Vox), and it's either sell this one or my mid-90's Howard Roberts....... I think this Guild might be a little easier to sell than the Gibson.....so here she is on Ebay! The case fits the guitar very well, but it has one broken latch (see pix) and the key latch spring is a little funky.....also missing the key. But it protects the guitar very well, and after all, that's the important part.
Great sounding guitars are hard to find....this one fits into that category!
When you find a 50 year old guitar that sounds great and looks great too.....that's special!
(There is nothing about this guitar that the professional player will not find impressive!)
Check my feedback, you'll get exactly what I am describing! I want the next owner to be as happy with this instrument as I have been. I will do everything reasonable to make that happen....but don't buy this wonderful instrument, stick cigarettes under the strings, gig with it for a month, spill beer on it, and then ask to return it because it's not quite what you expected. Therefore, this guitar is being sold as a "No Return Item" unless I have mis-represented it in some way.....which I haven't.
Oh, and please, let's get the "question and answer thing" done before the auction ends.
I will only ship to the lower 48. I have a guy locally trying to raise money to buy it, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if he strikes it rich! Bidding starts at $1,000.00 and insured shipping is $45.00 anywhere in the continental USA. "Buy-it-now" price is $1,250.00. (I intend to use extra packing and make doubly sure she arrives at her new home in as good of condition as she left from mine.) Thanks for your interest......and God bless!
