“Chet Atkins Combo” –

Guitar, Amp, Digital Echo 

Would you like to sound like Chet Atkins at a bargain price? No need to buy an overpriced Country Gentleman or too many pedals here!

Here is your chance to own what I call a “Chet Atkins Combo.” If you want to sound like Chet, you will only need three pieces of basic equipment – a Gretsch 5120, a Fender Twin Reverb, and a quality digital echo.

Other pedals can be added later on for specific sound effects, but in my opinion, these are the only three you will need to duplicate the same basic signature Chet Atkins sound from many of his RCA recordings from 1955-60. A few examples of these albums include Chet Atkins in Hollywood, In Three Dimensions, The Beatles, Fingerstyle Guitar, and Workshop.

The factory specs and technical details of these items can easily be found online, so I've decided to simply write a few comments based on my experience playing them. If you have questions, please feel free to ask.

Gretsch Electromatic 5120

In my opinion, this guitar is sufficient to reproduce the typical "Atkins sound" - mellow, fat, and twangy. (Finding guitar tablature that lays out the precise fingering used by Chet is also very helpful in duplicating this sound.) The guitar has a laminated maple hollow body with two pickups, an adjustable bridge, and a Bigsby vibrato. It has been well taken care of and is virtually scratch-free.

Fender Twin Reverb Amplifier

I like the clear, bell-like tones and nice reverb of the Twin Reverb. I believe that the brand name and model speaks for itself. 

Carl Martin "Red Repeat"

This high quality digital echo is a lot of fun and super easy to use. It produces a clear, distinct echo. You can adjust the knobs for loud, quick and sharp “thunder echos,” or for softer, slower echo effects similar to those heard in Chet’s piece entitled Blue Ocean Echo.
