ABOUT ME

Charles Ogsbury established the ODE Banjo company in Boulder, CO in 1961, producing a line of economically-priced, long-neck style banjos that were quickly adopted by many well-known players during the folk revival of the '60's. In 1965 ODE expanded its line to include wood-rimmed Mastertone-style banjos with solid resonator flanges and arch- or flat-head tone rings. These were some of the very best Mastertone-style banjos ever produced by any factory. Several models were introduced, including the famous 6500 model D, of which this banjo is an example.

The company was sold to Baldwin in 1966, and in 1976 manufacture of these same banjo models was given over to the Gretsch company -- then a Baldwin subsidiary. Throughout the Baldwin and Gretsch years the ODE banjos continued to be produced with very high quality standards. ODE banjos are sometimes said to be favored by melodic style players; the tone is that perfect combination of bell like overtones and ringing highs.

This example has serial number 6-79-01, which we believe dates it to 1979. It is a fine example of a high end model from one of the great banjo manufacturers. Hard case included.

The banjo was recently set-up by our senior banjo luthier and is in excellent condition. The instrument is missing one resonator thumbscrew. We have photographed the cosmetic imperfections that we could find, all of which are minor. The arm-rest is scuffed from normal playing wear, but there is no detectable “belt-buckle” wear. There is a circa 1 inch chip in the binding, a very small (ca. 1/16 inch) chip in the inlay behind the 9th fret, and a ¼ x ¼ inch area of finish bubbling, all pictured below.

About our eBay listings:

We take the time to write an individualized description on each and every item. We realize that buying instruments sight unseen can be very tricky, and we fully disclose any cosmetic flaws and playability issues on the item. If we are selling a new item and there is any evidence of shopwear, this will be included in the description (normally we will have also discounted the price appropriately). Check our feedback and you’ll see many of our buyers commented that the instrument arrived to them in even better condition that they were expecting. You can bid/buy with confidence—we offer a 7 day return policy.

Notes on international shipping: Serious bidders or buyers outside the continental US must contact us for a shipping quote before purchasing. Please include your city, country and postal code. We generally answer shipping inquiries Monday through Friday. Some information and guidelines for you: our preferred method of shipping internationally is USPS Express Mail. This method carries an insurance limit of $650. If the item is valued at over this cost, we can only ship by this method if the buyer assumes responsibility for any amount over $650 should the item be lost or damaged in shipping. To fully insure more expensive items, we will have to use UPS Worldwide or Global Express, both of which can range in cost from $300-$700. Some countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand & Hungary have very restrictive size limits on Express Mail, and in these cases we MUST ship items like guitars and banjos via UPS. You may have to pay customs duties as determined by your local jurisdiction upon the item’s arrival. We have no way of anticipating what these costs may be. Sorry, we do not adjust invoices to reflect a lower price for customs duties.

7-DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE
