Vintage 1960 Gretsch Duo Jet Model 6128
Electric Guitar
100% Original w/ OHSC (See
below photos)
Vintage 1960 Gretsch DuoJet model 6128 with all original parts,
including the original Gretsch gray "fleck" hardshell case.
Made in USA, serial # 386XX. This is NOT a reissue.
Semi-solid mahogany body. Maple top. Light weight, great
resonance, with significantly less poundage than the newer models.
Mahogany neck with Rosewood fretboard. Grover open back tuners. Two
Gretsch Filtertron pickups which sound incredible. Gretsch roller
bridge with G stamped tailpiece. Jet black top with natural sides and
back. The neoclassical "thumbprint" inlays are unique to
the post-1958 models , and the arrow G knobs are also very cool and unique.
This guitar is in very good condition for it's age. It does have
the expected nicks, checking, and wear that befit a well-loved 50
year old guitar. Still looks great with tons of vintage mojo. The
frets have plenty of life left, the neck is straight, and the guitar
plays fine all the way up the neck. Absolutely no breaks, repairs,
neck issues, crumbling binding, etc. All of the electronics work as they should. The two
Filtertrons are absolute screamers. The sound of these PU's through
an older Marshall Fender Gibson Ampeg or Vox amplifier is
unmistakably Gretsch.
Reissues generally run close to $2,000. For my money, this 50-year
old American classic beats a MIJ guitar hands down. Don't get me
wrong, the newer Japanese reissues are fine guitars, but after
playing quite a few Jets from both eras I ultimately decided to pony
up for the real thing. For example, compare the crisp 90 degree edges
on the back and sides of this guitar to the slightly rounded contours
of the newer models. As my local guitar tech noted, "Look at the
back of this guitar - those edges are razor sharp!"
2008 Vintage Guitar Price Guide lists this guitar at $5,500 -
$8,500 and the Gbase.com dealer retail price averages about $6,500.
My BIN price is considerably less. Selling to pay for a recent
kitchen remodel (don't ask!).
Auction includes 1997 bill of sale from 48th Street Custom Guitars
in New York (see photo below).
